Welcome

Carl McGill is a former officer with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). He had been assigned to numerous divisions, including patrol, training, and gangs. Officer McGill was commended throughout his career for his dedication and service to the community. He is known among his colleagues as a hardworking, reliable officer who is always willing to lend a helping hand. He took his job seriously and put the safety of the community as a priority. Officer McGill was also a strong believer in community policing and worked to build bridges between the police and the community. He had been recognized for fostering positive relationships between the LAPD and the communities it served.

He was well-known as a police reform community activist. In 1988 he was recognized in the national media, such as News Week magazine as “California’s Future Crime-solver” and ABC World News “Person of the Week” with appearances on the Oprah Winfrey and Geraldo television shows, for his anti-street gang programs to resolve Southern California street-gang violence. He donated off-duty time to community service as the founder of the Southern California Gang Awareness Program.

In 1992, soon after the Rodney King beating and the Los Angeles riots, he was recognized community advocate to reform the Los Angeles Police Department. As founder and president of the African American Peace Officers Association (AAPOA), it became the only police officer group to be honored for police reform in the United States after the Los Angeles City Council presented the AAPOA with a city council “police reform” resolution.
